Wilmington, N.C. – Frank Elegar (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond's) scored 17 points and had a career-high five blocked shots as Drexel defeated UNC Wilmington, 66-50. The Dragons (15-4, 7-2 CAA) won for the third straight time and defeated the Seahawks (4-14, 1-8 CAA) for the first time ever in Trask Coliseum.
The Dragons opened up an 11-2 lead and never trailed in the contest despite playing without Chaz Crawford (Philadelphia, Pa./Hargrave Military). The senior who leads the CAA in both rebounding and blocks suffered a shin contusion in the Delaware game.
Scott Rodgers (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) was 5-for-6 from the floor and finished with 15 points. Bashir Mason (Jersey City, N.J./St. Benedict's) added 11 points and is now just five shy of 1,000 career points.
Drexel only made seven field goals in the second half, but made 19 of its 22 attempts from the free-throw line. Elegar finished 9-for-10 from the line in the game. The Drexel defense continued its strong play by limiting UNCW to just 28 percent shooting in the game. Drexel entered the game ranked first in the CAA in field-goal percentage defense.
The Dragons return home for a key CAA contest on Saturday. Drexel will face Virginia Commonwealth in a game that can be seen on CN8 at noon. The Rams are undefeated at 9-0 in CAA play. The game can also be heard on WNTP 990 AM and on the web at drexeldragons.com.
